Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about 800 MHz Rebanding

  • What is 800 MHz Rebanding?
800 MHz Rebanding is a FCC mandated process by which Public Safety land mobile radio frequencies (NPSPAC channels) are being relocated within the 800 MHz spectrum. The reason for the relocation is to alleviate interference issues on Public Safety networks. However, before the Public Safety Agencies can be relocated, additional space in the 800 MHz spectrum (Channels 1 – 120) must first be cleared.

The entire 800 MHz Rebanding process, which involves the planning, negotiation, and reconfiguration of over 1000 individual Licensees, is being managed by the FCC appointed Transition Administrator (TA) in cooperation with Sprint Nextel. The Rebanding process is scheduled to take place over a 36 month period spanning the timeframe of 2H05 to 1H08.

  • Does Rebanding affect me?
Rebanding only affects you if you operate an 800 MHz system and have been notified by the FCC that you are affected by the FCC Report & Order on this subject.  If you have received notice from the FCC, please begin your rebanding process activities as soon as possible.  Following the FCC Report & Order is mandatory for all licensees, so active involvement in the Rebanding process will facilitate completion of your system modifications in the timeframe designated by the FCC.

  • What changes will I need to make?
There are several changes that may be required within your 800 MHz system. These changes can include reprogramming, retuning, or replacement of items such as base stations, mobile radios, and portable radios in your system. Please check with Sprint Nextel or the FCC Transition Administrator or other areas on this website for details regarding possible changes to your system.

  • How long do I have to make the changes?
The actual time that you have to make changes depends on a variety of items, but in principal it depends upon the segment (Wave) that you have been designated to be rebanded and by how quickly you have engaged with Sprint Nextel to complete your planning, negotiation, and reconfiguration. In general, if you are either a Channel 1 – 120 or NPSPAC licensee, the entire time allocation is approximately 24 months from start to finish, independent of the segment (Wave) that you have been designated.

  • What is EFJohnson's role in the Rebanding process?
EFJohnson is very active in the Rebanding process and has taken a leadership position in cooperating with Sprint Nextel, the FCC, the TA, and Public Safety licensees in formulating Rebanding policy and facilitating an expeditious, smooth, and product choice driven frequency transition. EFJohnson is providing a number of fully operational Rebanding Solutions, including replacement radios, to Public Safety Agencies who operate SMARTNET ® / SmartZone ®, Multi-Net®, Project 25, or Conventional systems.
